This picture was taken by an Italian medical student during an autopsy on the island of Malta. Apparently, medical students in Italy are not allowed to study human anatomy on real cadavers, so they go to neighbouring island nation of Malta and do it there, where it is allowed. Despite the significant Italian tradition of important anatomical studies, an outdated law historically influenced by the Catholic church restricts the use of cadavers for teaching and scientific purposes (Frati P, et al., 2006).
