Covington, Kentucky, USA – 2017. “I thought it was a prank because there was this body hanging out of the window,” a witness at the gas station said. The driver got out of the car, shaking, and walked into the gas station and told the cashier: “You have to call the police because I just hit this man on I-75,” he said.
In a 911 call, made at 12:54 am, someone tells a dispatcher that a pedestrian is trying to cross the highway and appears to be drunk. In another call, made at 1:09 am, a woman tells a dispatcher that a car with a person hanging from the windshield pulled into a gas station on 5th Street in Covington. “This guy’s just walking across the interstate and I swerve to miss him,” the driver said.
The man was later identified as a 51 year old homeless man who came to Northern Kentucky from Oregon and Oklahoma. He was a regular at the Parish Kitchen in Covington.
“The poor guy,” a witness said of the driver. “I felt sorry for him. He’s driving along and he hits this man and he drives – I guess from Kyles Lane all the way down to Fifth Street – with this guy half in and half out of his car. This is one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen.”
Covington police shut down the highway at Kyles Lane for about five hours to investigate. Traffic backed up for several miles, clear past Buttermilk Pike.
The assistant manager at Parish Kitchen, said he was a pleasant man. “Every time he came in he was really a pleasant guy, fun to talk to, very appreciative of what we have here and very thankful for the opportunity to come here and eat lunch. I’ll definitely miss seeing him here.”
